Let's see if this works...

Wheat berries planted in clay.

I have heard that wheat grass is a winter crop and grows much better as a crop in the cold and even in the snow.

I guess we shall see!

What are your favorite winter crops?

This I gotta see! Call me when the sprouts pop up. Will you water the clay? Do the sprouts get transplanted outside eventually? What nutrient source does the clay offer? :-)

Well I did add a small amount of water and cover them last night.

I stumbled across this a few years ago when using bird seed and clay for a sensory project. Somehow some of the seeds fell into the clay bag and were put away. About a week or so later, when we took out the clay for another project, we found sprouting action. That's when we also discovered that some seeds had spilled as well.

We tested it out with Lima beans in plastic bags on the window. As well as with corn. This is my first go at adding water and having them placed in containers like this.

I too am excited to see the results. The wonderful thing about the Reggio philosophy is that the teachers are seen as full on learners as well. I am embracing the learning that we all will share through these wheat berries ;-)
